No pity, just business

St. John's Bakery is an award-winning non-profit social enterprise. It began at St John's Mission, where a homeless Hungarian ex-baker taught the mission how to make sourdough bread. Thirty four years later its bread is found in fine grocery outlets, restaurants and farmers markets.

The recipes come from Brittany, France, and follow a strict traditional method. Each hand-crafted loaf takes more than 48 hours from start to finish, and certified organic flour is always the starting point.

The bakery was created as a place of employment for people less fortunate. It trains bakers for permanent work beyond its door, and its social employment awards include Toronto Life, the Toronto Star and United Way.
